Ingredients:
- 4-5 medium-sized Granny Smith apples
- 1 (14-ounce) can of sweetened condensed milk (ensure it’s gluten-free)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/3 cup light corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
- Wooden sticks for dipping
- Toppings of your choice: chopped nuts, sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, crushed gluten-free cookies, etc.
Instructions:
- Prepare the Apples:
- Wash and dry the apples thoroughly. This ensures that the caramel will stick properly.
- Slice each apple into wedges. For easy handling and eating, consider cutting each apple into 8 slices.
- Insert Wooden Sticks:
- Insert wooden sticks into the bottom of each apple slice. This will make them resemble traditional caramel apples on a stick. Place the prepared apple slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Make the Caramel:
- In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, butter, and light corn syrup.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously to prevent it from sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then lower the heat to medium-low. Continue to cook and stir for about 10-15 minutes until the caramel thickens and turns a rich, golden brown color.
- Remove the caramel from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Let it cool for a few minutes.
- Dip the Apple Slices:
- Dip each apple slice into the caramel, ensuring it’s fully coated. Allow any excess caramel to drip back into the saucepan.
- Add Toppings:
- While the caramel is still warm, roll the caramel-coated apple slices in your choice of toppings. Chopped nuts, sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, or crushed gluten-free cookies work well.
- Set and Cool:
- Place the caramel-coated apple slices back on the parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Let them cool and set. This will take around 15-20 minutes.
- Enjoy:
- Once the caramel is set, your gluten-free caramel apple slices are ready to enjoy. They make a perfect Halloween treat or a delightful dessert for any occasion.
